CYNEFIN MASTERPLAN, CAT

	(2022)

Masterplan
With: Haworth Tompkins and Rural Office
Client: Centre for Alternative TechnologyFollowing a successful competition win, JCLA worked alongside Hayworth Tompkins and Rural Office on the Cynefin project for CAT near Machynlleth, in the Dyfi biosphere. The project proposes a new masterplan for the site, underpinned by landscape, ecology and environmental strategies, to help shape the future of CAT for the next 50 years.

Proposals include immersive landscape moments, enhancing ecological connectivity and improving site legibility. A careful balance was needed between protecting existing ecology while proposing a bold new set of enhancements for visitors, education and wildlife. Part of a constantly evolving landscape, shaped at once by natural processes and human influences, the landscape and ecology strategy aims to simultaneously demonstrate the history & development of CAT and showcase a vision of a positive, sustainable future to come.

ALBERTA STREET FRUIT AND NUT GARDEN

	(2018 - 2019)

Soft & hard landscape design
Client: Alberta Street TRAWorking with the local tenants and residents’ association of the Alberta Estate in Kennington, South London, JCLA produced designs to breathe life back into overlooked spaces within the estate. The ‘Fruit and Nut Garden’ re-imagines a small linear garden space bordering a residential street, with new fruit and nut tree planting, an edible hedge, along with planting of flowers and spring bulbs. Further down the street, a pomegranate tree provides an exotic element to the mix of edible fruits across the estate as part of the ‘Alberta Fruit Commons’.

	GLOBAL CENTRE FOR RAIL EXCELLENCE

	(2022 - Ongoing)

MasterplanWith: 5th Studio
Client: Global Centre for Rail ExcellenceJCLA are working with 5th Studio on a landscape masterplan for a 475 hectare site at the head of the Dulais and Tawe Valleys north east of Swansea, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons. The site includes the former Nant Helen opencast mine and Onllwyn washery, and will establish a significant centre for railway innovation and testing.

Works include the landscape design for new supporting infrastructure including the sidings in the former washeries, a new bridge and hotel, and extensive planting and biodiversity enhancements. Proposals explore the potential to enhance drainage proposals to collect, intercept and attenuate large quantities of water to create a visible water story across the site, with amenity and ecological benefits. Connected woodland corridors / native tree planting significantly supports government aims for decarbonisation and reversing biodiversity harm. Working with the existing post-carbon landscape, proposals explore re-use of existing infrastructural elements such as washery structures, timber sleepers, tracks, rail objects to embed the site with heritage, habitats, and identity. There is also an emphasis on innovation and self-managing future landscape strategies for SuDS features, embankment stabilisation, closed loop strategies and re-use of excess spoil for the creation of landmark features and biodiverse habitats.

THE AMERICAN GARDEN, PECKHAM RYE PARK

	(2018 - Ongoing)

Soft landscape design

Client: The American Garden in Peckham charity & Southwark CouncilJCLA were appointed to revitalise the American Garden in Peckham Rye Park. The design is inspired by the once popular 19th century ‘American Garden’ style: informal and naturalistic gardens where American species, recently introduced to Britain, played the most important role. JCLA’s design is also referencing the work of Peter Collinson, an 18th century Peckham based merchant and plantsman, who was key in importing and popularising North American plants, sparking the interest in ‘American Gardens’. The species used are based on garden history researcher Nancy Coleman-Frank's research and are primarily ones Collinson traded with, as well as ones he grew in his Peckham garden.

Working around a set of valuable existing trees, including a Holm Oak dating back to the original farmstead that occupied the site prior to the park’s creation, the new organically shaped planting beds create a carefully choreographed series of experiences, inviting people to move around, into and through the garden, as well as sheltered spaces in which to linger. A sense of musical composition and rhythm is also reflected in the shape of the garden, inspired by musical notation. The planting is designed to be seasonally changing and multilayered, with trees and shrubs forming the main structure of the beds, with an understorey of perennials.

Client: LB Hammersmith & FulhamPlayground design for Holy Cross Primary school in Fulham, accompanying a refurbishment project of the school buildings and grounds, with each year having direct access to outdoor play and learning areas.A number of creative play spaces are provided around the school campus. An inner courtyard with scented climbers and a bespoke water feature provides spill out space from adjacent classrooms. A new reading area around an existing oak tree uses natural materials nestled among planting to create a quiet and restful space. A number of raised planters throughout the grounds for growing herbs and edible plants encourage an easy engagement with the natural world.

The larger play spaces use bold and colourful materials, combined with abstract line markings and imaginative timber play elements to encourage an open creative interpretation by the children. Significant new tree planting brings colourful seasonal changes and supports biodiversity within the school grounds, as well as providing a green screen to the adjacent road. Playful structures surround large trees in the main playground as pieces for climbing and sitting.

Hard & soft landscape design

Client: W.RE
With: Caruso St John Architects
Hard and soft landscape design for mixed use project in Camden comprising commercial office and light industrialblock and two residential blocks, clustered around a pocket park
providing access across the site.
The pocket park comprises a lush shady courtyard with trees, shrubs, perennials and ferns, with feature boulders and a small playful area. Surface materials reflect the industrial heritage of the locality near the Grand Union Canal, with stone and timber setts. The pocket park provides a new
public route and a space for residentsto relax within this busy part of the
city.
The planting takes inspiration from shady woodland settings and the
influence of the natural valley of the river Fleet in this area, with two new semi-mature trees and a multi-layered approach including multi-stem shrubs, herbaceous plants and bulbs for splashes of seasonal colour. The commercial building features generous roof terraces with a varied

 VICTORIA ROAD, Landscape Strategy

	(2019—2021)

Strategic landscape design

Client: Old Oak & Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC)
A strategic appraisal of the existing landscape character within the OPDC area, and a framework to inform future landscape development.JCLA were commissioned by OPDC to produce a landscape strategy for the Victoria Road area around Old Oak and Wormwood Scrubs, continuing our work in the area on the Willesden
Junction station improvements, canal access improvements and Cerebos Gardens projects. The initial study examined the context and influence of the ‘Middlesex landscape’; a key signature for the local area, bringing the wider countryside associations and rich tapestry of
historic land use to the fore, to inform character for landscape development in the area. The
landscape strategy sets out a number of Guiding Principles, which in turn formed Key
Landscape Objectives for the area to work within the setting, build the idea of the
‘common’, and establish a resilient landscape. We were then commissioned by OPDC for a follow on ‘Landscape Primer’, identifying key character area objectives and illustrating a number of ‘design clues’ for application within
each of the areas. This work is now being built into the emerging SPD for the public realm for
the updated Local Plan.

 TOTTENHAM GREEN,
Phases 1 & 2

	(2018—2021)

Soft landscape design
With: Adams & Sutherland architects
Client: LB Haringey
Phased landscape improvements for this important public space; Phase 1 included access, existing tree works and new planting to a public green space. Phase 2 includes public realm
enhancement, rain gardens and a playful children’s library garden, with Adams &
Sutherland.Phase 1 of Tottenham Green re-invigorated this large green space along the busy Tottenham High Road. Many mature trees are present in the space, and so a careful regime of crown-
lifting was employed to improve sightlines and light levels within the Green. Robust new planting, particularly at edges to the road, bus stops and entrances includes textural
Miscanthus grass, colourful dogwoods and roses.Phase 2 creates a unified public space outside of the Bernie Grant Arts Centre and Marcus Garvey libraty. New trees and rain garden planting act as characters in the space, bringing
colour and seasonality to the flexible space. A feature Catalpa tree provides shade, shelter,
large bright leaves and colourful flowers. Outside the library, a children’s garden with retained birch tree, new fruit tree and large climbable boulders set amongst textural shrubs
and herbaceous plants enhances sensory experience. Herbs, edible fruits and a living willow arbor provide further engagement opportunities, and scented climbers will grow up over time to create a living green screen to the perimeter.
